PEACE PARKS PROGRAMMES
The programmes differ from the projects in that they encompass more than one peace park and rather include many, if not all southern Africa's TFCAs. The Climate Change Programme, TFCA Veterinary Programme and Ecosystem Services are run by Peace Parks Foundation, whereas Boundless Southern Africa was launched and is run by nine southern African countries. They all set out to achieve the best not only for the region's TFCAs, but also for the partner countries and its people.Climate change programme in Southern Africa's TFCAs
The Peace Parks Foundation Climate Change Programme is facilitating the implementation of climate change mitigation ventures with the focus on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD).
The Programme aims to empower stakeholders of the SADC countries that are partners in transfrontier conservation area (TFCA) development by assisting them to:
- identify ways to deal with the reasons for and causes of deforestation specific to their regions;
- develop methods and tools for measuring and monitoring carbon assets and greenhouse gas emissions;
- facilitate the participation of all stakeholders; and
- access financial and technical assistance.
As a result of the climate change mitigation feasibility studies and risk assessment, the Zambian component of Kavango-Zambezi (KAZA) TFCA was selected for a first generation REDD demonstration project.
Zambia was also one of the nine countries selected to pilot the United Nations Collaborative Programme on REDD in Developing Countries (UN REDD). The project is therefore being designed and implemented in parallel with the UN REDD national programme activities.
In consultation with stakeholders the Programme is investigating strategic community project mitigation interventions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These include:
- Reducing the conversion of forest land to agricultural land (deforestation) through conservation agriculture initiatives;
- Reducing degradation by adding value to existing timber and non-timber forest product activities; and
- Reducing deforestation and degradation through community-based fire management.
