|Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park

Tourist Attractions

One of the main challenges associated with the implementation of the Transfrontier Park is the rehabilitation of diamond mining areas on both sides of the Orange River. And as diamond mining has dwindled, tourism is one of the few means of bringing about sustainable economic development in the area.

Parks | landscape [© 2009 Koos van der Lende]On the South African side, a poverty relief grant of R27-million was spent to upgrade roads, construct entrance gates, upgrade certain Nama huts for educational purposes, establish socio-ecology offices, upgrade rest camps and build new rest camps. Each of the towns - Khuboes, Sanddrift, Lekkersing and Eksteenfontein now boasts its own rest camp and Sendelingsdrift has cottages as well as a tented camp. The camps at the towns will be managed by the Richtersveld communities.

On the Namibian side the |Ai-|Ais Hot Springs and the Fish River Canyon offer more extensive tourist accommodation facilities.

The opening of the Sendelingsdrift Tourist Access Facility has facilitated movement between the Richtersveld and the Fish River Canyon and Hot Springs by shortening the route between the two sections of the transfrontier park by almost 500km. icon video View video clip

The Ai-Ais Hot Springs Game Park also sports a new entrance gate at Dreigat.

  • 2 standard 4x4 vehicles without trailers
  • 1 standard 4x4 vehicle with trailer
  • 2 standard light motor vehicles with trailers
  • 1 bus with a seating capacity of less than 20
